미국 고용통계국(U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)에서 매월 발표하는 지수로써, 미국 전체 및 세부 지역 별로 소비재 및 서비스 시장에 대해 도시 소비자가 지불하는 가격의 시간 경과에 따른 평균 변화를 측정 한 것

 

CPI stands for Consumer Price Index, which is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services. CPI is often used as an indicator of inflation and is calculated by collecting and analyzing data on prices for a wide range of consumer goods and services, including food, housing, clothing, transportation, medical care, and entertainment.

Core CPI, on the other hand, is a measure of the CPI that excludes certain volatile components that are prone to large fluctuations in price. Specifically, core CPI excludes the prices of food and energy, which can be highly volatile due to factors such as weather, geopolitical events, and changes in supply and demand.

 

The reason for excluding food and energy prices from core CPI is to provide a more stable and reliable measure of underlying inflation trends. By removing the effects of short-term price movements in these categories, economists and policymakers can better assess whether inflation is being driven by underlying economic factors such as changes in the money supply, labor market conditions, or productivity growth.

Overall, both CPI and core CPI are important economic indicators that provide valuable insights into the health of the economy and the potential for inflationary pressures.
